PER[FORM]ANCE: A MONTAGE METROPOLIS

STUDIO 5B

For far too long as cities spread and densified, there has been a pushing out of businesses that are deemed “undesirable” towards the edges of a city. The types of businesses that have been the most affected by this pushing out are the skilled trade jobs, these jobs include mechanics, craftsmen, fabricators, etc…, who while the world has been progressing towards a more technological future, have not experienced the same technological growth. While there is no way to exactly know what the future holds from a technological standpoint perse, we can start however, by taking a look through film and its adaptations of what the future looks like. Film and architecture are forms of art that have tangentially worked with one another in history but, they have never fully utilized one anothers potential. Being able to use film and research in combination can inform the direction of where the futures of skilled trade jobs are headed. The new city concept will integrate these forgotten about and put aside businesses as a part of the growing city while allowing for these businesses to work and grow together.

My proposed skilled trade campus’ will create a host of buildings that will allow craftsmen, mechanics, and fabricators to all work together to create and fix the city that they are a part of. With the inclusion of new future technologies fabricators will be able to create at a level and scale that would allow them to supply parts and pieces to all the other businesses in the city. This increase in output of production will allow for a decrease in needed space that these skilled trade jobs would require to operate. This decrease in space will also allow for these businesses to function more as a showroom for people to be able to purchase the items made by these jobs. With the advancement in production we would also see a decrease in the overall need of the hands-on methodology that has prevailed throughout history, and will allow for robots to take over much of the labor, typically done by man.

The skilled trade campus will have many buildings that correspond to the larger fabrication building where drones would serve as the delivery system for the materials. The drones serve as a nerve system that allows for the passing of goods and information in an efficient and fast manner. Additionally allowing these programs to spread out and incorporated into the city just like any other business is a necessity because these skilled trades jobs can normally be found in compound like structures, that limited their visibility to the public. Being able to stand on their own as individual businesses allows for  these skilled trade jobs to showcase themselves and their work.

Below are examples of the fabrication center as well as a few other examples of the updated skilled trades jobs that will forever be changed in this future city.
